If you are thinking about visiting Sheffield this October, there is a good chance you already have a reason for coming. Perhaps there is a concert you want to see, a theatre show you have booked, a sporting event you are travelling for, or you simply fancy a weekend somewhere different.
The good thing about Sheffield is that you do not necessarily have to stop at the event that brought you here. There is usually something else happening around it.
October is a particularly good example. From live music and theatre to food, independent nightlife, film, festivals, family events and Halloween activities, Sheffield has a busy programme running throughout the month. Several events also overlap, creating some particularly lively weekends for anyone considering making a proper trip of it.
Sheffield's nightlife is difficult to put into one category, and that is part of its appeal. There are the familiar city-centre bars and venues around Division Street and Devonshire Green, but the city's evening scene extends well beyond traditional nightlife. Live music, independent restaurants, theatre, comedy, cultural events and smaller venues all contribute to the city's character after dark.
Kelham Island is a good example of how much Sheffield has changed while retaining its identity. Former industrial buildings now sit alongside restaurants, breweries, creative businesses and independent venues, creating a neighbourhood that has become one of the city's most recognisable places to spend an evening.
There is plenty to explore across the rest of October. Restaurant Week continues until 25 October, giving visitors the opportunity to explore Sheffield's food scene, while the International Market brings food, crafts and products from different cultures to Fargate from 14–17 October. Off the Shelf, Sheffield's literary festival, also continues across the city during October.
Theatre is another strong part of the month's programme. Sheffield Theatres has Twelfth Night, Dear Evan Hansen and Heathers the Musical running through the latter part of the month, followed by Burlesque The Musical at the Lyceum from 27–31 October.
There is also a strong programme of live entertainment. Paul Smith performs at Utilita Arena Sheffield on 16 and 17 October, while the Proclaimers arrive on 21 October. Later in the month, the arena hosts Dalton Smith's world championship boxing fight against Alberto Puello on 24 October.
For something more niche, Sensoria runs from 22–25 October, bringing music, film and digital culture to venues around the city. Celluloid Screams takes place over the same weekend at Showroom Workstation, offering a programme of horror films, premieres and special screenings.
One of the busiest periods comes between 21 and 25 October. The Steel City Beer & Cider Festival returns to Kelham Island Museum from 21–24 October for its 50th year, while the WUKF European Karate Championships take place from 21–25 October at Canon Medical Arena.
Then there is Saturday 24 October, which is shaping up to be one of the month's busiest dates. Alongside the boxing at Utilita Arena, Soul II Soul performs at Sheffield City Hall, and SynthFest UK takes place at The Octagon. Sheffield Theatres also has several performances scheduled that day.
For families, Sunday 25 October brings Out of This World to Sheffield city centre. The free event combines science fiction, comics, gaming, magic, street entertainment and Halloween activities, giving families another reason to spend the day in the city.
As the month comes to an end, Sheffield's Halloween programme takes over. There are seasonal trails, family activities, film screenings, live entertainment and evening events across the city, alongside theatre productions such as Burlesque The Musical and All Rise for Halloween.
With so much happening within a relatively short period, October is less about finding one thing to do and more about deciding how much of Sheffield you want to experience.
An event can be the reason you travel to Sheffield, but it does not have to be the whole trip.
If you are coming for a Saturday night concert, for example, staying overnight means you can have dinner before the show, stay for a drink afterwards and take your time the following morning. A theatre booking can become an evening in the city rather than a trip centred around getting home immediately afterwards. A sporting event can become a weekend, with time to explore the neighbourhood around it.
This is particularly relevant when several events are taking place at the same time. The weekend of 24 October is a good example. Someone arriving for the boxing may also discover a concert, a festival, theatre or another event taking place around the city. Rather than treating the original event as the beginning and end of the trip, there is an opportunity to make a weekend of it.
Sheffield's visitor figures suggest that many people are already doing exactly that. Overnight visitors stayed for an average of 2.4 nights in 2025, contributing £427 million to the city's visitor economy.
Where you stay can make a difference to that experience. Sheffield is compact enough to explore different parts of the city, but each neighbourhood has its own character, and choosing a base close to the things you plan to do can make the trip considerably easier.
For visitors interested in food, independent bars, breweries and the atmosphere around Kelham Island, AVO's apartments at 20 South Parade offer a particularly convenient base. The property is in the S3 area, close to Kelham Island Museum and within easy reach of Sheffield city centre. AVO offers a range of apartments in the area, including one-, two- and four-bedroom options, making it suitable for different types of visitors.

For visitors coming for football, theatre or a city-centre weekend, Priestley House at 60 Priestley Street provides another central option. It is around a 10-minute walk from Sheffield Station and within easy reach of Bramall Lane, making it particularly practical for football supporters as well as visitors planning to spend most of their time around the city centre.
Visitors coming to Sheffield for a major event at Utilita Arena can also consider AVO's Bessemer accommodation on Carlisle Street East. The property provides a practical base for guests attending events at the arena, with private rooms and accommodation options designed around a more flexible stay.

Not every trip to Sheffield needs to be centred around the city centre, either. For groups looking for more space and a quieter residential setting, AVO's accommodation around Helmton Road offers a different type of stay, particularly for guests who want somewhere that feels more like a home while still being able to travel into the city for events and activities.

The advantage of serviced accommodation in this context is the flexibility it gives you. Having a kitchen, living space and somewhere to properly settle in can be useful when a short visit turns into several nights, particularly for families, groups, professionals and people travelling for work or events.
One of the easiest ways to enjoy Sheffield is to avoid treating your main event as the entire itinerary.
Come into the city for the show, but give yourself time to eat somewhere you have not tried before. Explore Kelham Island. Find a bar or live music venue. Visit a museum or gallery. Take a walk the following morning. If you have more time, Sheffield's proximity to the Peak District means you can combine a city break with some time outdoors.
That flexibility is part of what makes Sheffield an appealing destination. A person coming for a concert can have a completely different weekend from someone coming for a sporting event, a theatre production or a family day out, but the city has enough variety to accommodate all of them.
